The PhD Course in Translational and Internal Medicine (TaCIM) is delivered by the Department of Internal and Specialty Medicine at the University of Genova.
TaCIM is held by a faculty of scientists and physician scientists with diverse backgrounds, including molecular and cellular biology, pathology, biotechnology, pharmacology, and clinical science, who work in internal medicine and its specialty subfields.
Many TaCIM faculty members also have a position at the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, a research hospital that serves as hub for the region where Genova is located. This strengthens the uniqueness of TaCIM, since PhD candidates can use the facilities of the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino and learn from its staff. Overall, TaCIM students have access to several pre-clinical laboratories, a recently renewed, state-of-the-art animal facility, and clinical units, in a stimulating and exciting environment.
Over a 3-year program, PhD candidates are offered in-depth lessons and seminars, workshops, and practical sessions. Furthermore, they are engaged in research projects within one of nine curricula:
• translational haematology
• translational oncology
• cancer genetics and molecular pathology
• cardiovascular and respiratory diseases
• renal and cardiovascular disease and arterial hypertension
• gerontology, nutrition, and anti-aging medicine
• endocrine and metabolic diseases and obesity
• diseases of the digestive system and of the liver
• autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
The Department of Internal and Specialty Medicine has ongoing scientific collaborations with biomedical research centres at other sites in Italy and all over the world, and PhD candidates are encouraged to spend a period of formation abroad by exploiting these connections.
The TaCIM faculty is looking forward to shaping the next generation of researchers in pre-clinical and clinical internal medicine!
