Curriculum in Gerontology, Nutrition, and Anti-aging Medicine

The Curriculum in Gerontology, Nutrition, and Anti-aging Medicine provides the knowledge and the skills necessary to conduct pre-clinical and clinical research projects in the areas of Geriatrics, Biogerontology, and Human Nutrition. These fields are intertwined, sharing key relevant pathogenetic, pathophysiological, and clinical interconnections.
Among geriatric syndromes and diseases, special attention is given to frailty and related clinical trajectories in the oncogeriatric, orthogeriatric and psychogeriatric field, focusing in particular on the impact of frailty on clinical outcomes in older adults. The role of social vulnerability in shaping older adults’ resilience and quality of life is also a major focus of the Curriculum.
With respect to Biogerontology, our main areas of interest are i) the pathophysiology and treatment of aging-associated diseases, ii) the study of dietary restriction as a preventive and therapeutic approach to these conditions, iii) the role of NAD+ and NAD+-dependent enzymes in aging and aging-associated diseases, iv) the prevention of atherosclerosis and the treatment of the main cardiovascular risk factors and v) the prevention of non-transmissible chronic diseases with correct lifestyle.
Regarding Clinical Nutrition, the Curriculum covers the evaluation of nutritional status and body composition, the fundamentals of human nutrition and food science, the management of malnutrition both by excess and by deficiency, the knowledge of the main dietary approaches and their impact on health/disease, the use of nutraceutical in cardiovascular prevention and chronic-degenerative diseases, the study of human microbiome, and the evaluation and promotion of food sustainability.
